Tiny Town Association

On of the most interesting ideas I have been following lately is the Tiny Town Association which is a Non-Profit founded by Ed Peterson. Ed’s idea is…

To build towns for THOWs (Tiny Houses On Wheels) within commuting distance of host cities. This Tiny Town model adds appeal to the host city by increasing the available, affordable housing options, without affecting the space occupied by traditional homes.

Ed has done a lot of leg work on the idea and has even built one of the models of tiny home that would be offered.

The Logan is a 32-foot tiny home designed on a single floor to accommodate seniors as well. The design is the result of many trials and boasts a one-piece acrylic walk-in shower with seat and a convenient second exterior door.

Ed has been able to secure some sponsors who have helped him build The Logan, including Timbercraft Tiny Homes who sponsored the set of plans for The Logan and Longevity Acrylics who sponsored the one-piece acrylic shower.

But not only has Ed come up with a model tiny home, he has also come up with a lot of statistics to go along with his vision.

To get an explanation of these stats and to read more about the Tiny Town Association and it’s new charity 24Pillars which is focusing on providing tiny homes to the homeless, check out these great resources:

Tiny With a Twist

I love Tiny Homes enough as it is, but when I see a tiny with a twist I am mesmerized! When it comes to saving space and making the most of what you got to work with, nobody compares to Europeans. I stumbled across the company Optinid based out of Rhône-Alpes in Southeast France. When you see their designs, there’s no doubt Eric, Christopher, Jonas and Yoann are creating some unique tiny homes.

I have to begin with my favourite part, albeit the part that would never be viable in Canada. They call it a “Sunroof” and they aren’t far off. If you live in a sunny climate, this is a feature that will have you sold! They are the first to ever introduce the idea of a retractable, roof allowing you to sunbathe by day, and stargaze by night!

What they do on the inside to conserve space and make sure everything has a purpose is amazing as well. From utilizing a tabletop as part of the stairs to the seating area transforming into a bed.

Looking at the exteriors of their tiny homes is also a treat. They utilize low sloped double roof lines in most cases to maximize interior space. Their selection of materials and colours also makes for a beautiful exterior.

Here’s a short video of the sunroof in operation.

Check out their Facebook page for more photos of their designs.

Sheriff of Nottingham

So as some or most of you may or may not know, I work with Steve Zaleschuk from Finished Right Contracting designing & building Tiny Homes…well, I don’t build them…trust me you don’t want that. I help with design and he is the Master Builder so he builds them. One of our most recent creations is “The Nottingham” which is a 10-foot wide by 28-foot long beauty of a home which Steve delivered to Vancouver Island. I really liked what Steve did with the interior of this one, and I think you will too.

School Bus Gets Good Grades!

My last post featured a Tiny Fire House, designed & built to teach Fire Safety. This time we are going to have a look at an old School Bus transformed into a Tiny Home.

The idea & transformation comes from a man who says,

I have never built anything. Ever. I’ve helped paint a few houses on mission trips and I helped install some plastic lattice once, but that’s about it.

My background is in graphic design and illustration. I always wanted to build a tiny house and I always wanted to travel. So I spent years playing around with tiny house designs in my spare time.

Ultimately I decided upon a school bus because I thought “Hey, there’s already for [sic] walls and a roof. Throw some wood and some light bulbs in there and call it a day.” How foolish of me. I ended up doing a complete build on the back of the bus.

He purchased the bus for $2000 from publicsurplus.com. He got it so cheap because the busses were being sold on a new site and not many people had known about the switch yet.

Although he doesn’t mention how much he spent on the transformation, he did get some really great deals, as he mentions in his posts which were published in this article.

Going Tiny Seems Perfect!

Alexis Haifley used to work as a Park Ranger for the National Park Service, which meant moving around a lot. After getting used to the nomadic lifestyle, her and her husband would joke around that a Tiny House would be perfect. The thought of focusing on Family, friends and experiences rather than things appealed to her. Plus she loved the fact that she could customize them however she wanted.

Although they don’t live in it full-time yet, she said the financing and building wasn’t what she was expecting. The things she thought would be difficult, were simple, and there were challenges she never thought would lead to such a domino effect.

They are right now in the process of downsizing and say it will be interesting to see what they’ve paired down to.

The “Superhouse” Completed!

You may or may not recall my post about the “Superhouse” from back in March, but it was about half complete. Well now, it is completed, and has been delivered to site!

Here are some pics from the rest of the build by Finished Right Contracting, the finished product, and a video of the owners seeing it for the first time.

The best part of this may be the reaction from the owners…enjoy!

Helga the House Box

When you are looking to convert an existing unit into a tiny house, you probably don’t think about using an old horse-box (vehicle for transporting horses). This next tiny house was converted from just that. Helga, as she’s affectionately known as, came complete with hay and horse manure.

Then she was gutted and completely and redone, with the design and style ideas of her new owners Simon & Gemma. The results are the beautiful rustic unit you see in the photos below.
